Calluses are your feet’s way of protecting themselves — but when they get thick, cracked, or unsightly, it’s time to act. Here’s a safe at-home routine that actually works.
Step 1: Soften first
Soak feet in warm (not hot) water for 10–15 minutes. This softens hardened skin so it buffs away easily instead of tearing.
Step 2: Buff gently
Use an electric foot file or pumice on the softened areas, working in gentle circles. Don’t overdo it — removing too much skin at once causes soreness and faster regrowth. A little each session is the goal.
Step 3: Moisturize immediately
Pat dry and apply a thick foot cream or plain petroleum jelly, then put on socks. This locks in moisture overnight — you’ll feel the difference by morning.
What to avoid
Skip razor-style callus shavers (easy to cut too deep) and harsh chemical peels if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or cracked/bleeding skin — see a podiatrist instead.
Keep them away
Calluses come back when friction does. Well-fitting shoes, moisture-wicking socks, and a weekly maintenance buff keep feet smooth long-term.
